The setting was delicious, and if it weren’t for the deadly cult and the fact that I’m not a fictional character, I’d be aching to get enrolled myself. I revelled in Murphy’s detailed descriptions of the ancient stone ceilings, mahogany walls and manicured gardens of Morton Academy. If you don’t want to know what they are, consider this your spoiler alert (I won’t ever identify the murderer though, just call them ‘Character X’ instead)… Unlike Liz in this book, I love to drink my tea from a tea cup.Ĭlick here for the Earl Grey muffins recipe.

It’s revealed from the get-go that prestigious Morton is harbouring some very sinister secrets. The story takes place at Morton Academy and it follows a group of stereotypical, but very brainy, teenagers. I haven’t always been that excited by YA murder mysteries, so I was definitely lucky to have stumbled upon this beautifully Gothic, dark academia novel. I was introduced to Cynthia Murphy and her second novel, ‘ Win Lose Kill Die’, after booking myself onto the ‘Thrills and Chills’ panel at the upcoming NYA Lit Fest in Preston.
